rDME production in India

Call for Proposals -

rDME production

We’re currently inviting interested parties to submit pre- feasibility study proposals for Renewable & Recycled Carbon Dimethyl Ether (rDME) production in India for a commercial plant of 50Kt/y rDME.

Taking inspiration from India’s world-leading ethanol programme, a blend of 10% renewable liquid gas such as Renewable & Recycled Carbon Dimethyl Ether (rDME) with fossil LPG could provide significant added value—creation of rural jobs, clean-up of waste and residues, improved air quality, reduced dependency on imports and lower carbon intensity.

It’s estimated that over 500 million metric tonnes of agricultural residues plus ~60 million metric tonnes of MSW are generated in India each year. Were these waste-products all converted to Renewable & Recycled Carbon Dimethyl Ether (rDME), the output would come close to supplying global volumes of ~200 million metric tonnes of LPG (and more in future!)*

Futuria Fuels would like to invite all interested parties to submit pre-feasibility study proposals for rDME production in India for a commercial plant of 50Kt/y rDME. A successful proposal should provide sufficient confidence in the understanding of the individual process steps and technologies to achieve an integrated process.

  • Cost of production must be in line with the LPG equivalent in India.
  • Feedstocks need to be agriculture waste, residues, or recycled carbon and be indigenous to India.
  • Use of primary fossil fuels (e.g. coal) is specifically out of scope.
  • The proposal can include funding request for key trials.

Please note that requests for funding and trials which fall significantly below these TRLs are unlikely to be successful

*Agricultural residues: TIFAC (Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council) carried a study in 2018 ‘’Estimation of surplus Crop residues in India for Biofuel production’’ and estimated that main 11 crops in India generated 683 million metric tonnes of dry biomass. Out of this approx. 26% i.e., 178 million metric tonnes are surplus biomass. Municipal solid waste: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India generates over 62 million tons (MT) of waste in a year. CPCB (Central Pollution Control board) also estimate approx. 60 million metric tonnes.
